Decision For Change

Jaka Kovačič

Master of Psychosocial Counselling

The counseling process allows for a gradual and increasingly authentic connection with our essence and living in accordance with our deepest purpose. In the counseling process, confidentiality, integrity, acceptance and safety are upheld, as it is the most intimate path of self-exploration.

About me

As a professional, I hold a Master's degree in Psychosocial Counseling and am currently enrolled in a specialization program for psychodynamic psychotherapy. I am trained in individual counseling, couples counseling, and group counseling. I have several years of experience in providing counseling to clients in the business field, as well as several years of experience in competitive sports.

Approach and method

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is an active, semi-structured, time-limited, present-focused psychotherapeutic approach, which is the most scientifically researched. (Wenzel 2017) It addresses problematic cognitive, behavioral, and emotional patterns that cause psychological problems and mental disorders (2018) for a wide range of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, PTSD, and OCD. (Vermon and Doyle 2018)

In my practice, I also use the cognitive-behavioral approach of the second wave, called Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT). This approach is based on three hypotheses: thinking and emotions are strongly connected, the connection is mutual, and the functioning is circular. Furthermore, inner dialogue - thoughts and emotions are formed in a conversation with oneself.

I also use the third-generation behavioral therapy approach called Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), which is based on the processes of mindfulness, acceptance, and commitment, and behavioral activation, with the aim of promoting psychological flexibility. In this third wave, mindfulness, emotions, acceptance, relationship, values, goals, and meta-cognition are emphasized.

As part of my training, I am currently enrolled in a specialization program in psychodynamic psychotherapy at the Institute of psychodynamic psychotherapy. This program focuses on the theoretical and practical aspects of psychoanalytic psychotherapy, which is a form of therapy that looks at how past experiences, emotions, and unconscious thoughts and feelings can affect an individual's current behavior and relationships. During my training, I am learning how to use this approach to help individuals understand and address their mental health concerns.

Individual counseling

Individual counseling is tailored to the individual, aimed at addressing personal areas that present challenges or even unresolved situations. It allows for a deep and authentic connection with oneself, and is often a necessary step in the process of self-improvement and self-actualization. The process is confidential and promotes integrity, acceptance, and safety, as it deals with the most intimate aspects of one's self.

Couples counseling

is intended for couples or individuals who wish to improve, maintain or change the quality of their relationship. The goal of couples counseling is to help couples understand and manage conflicts and improve communication, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. During the counseling sessions, couples will work with a therapist to identify negative patterns of behavior and communication and learn new ways to interact with each other. With the help of a therapist, couples can learn the skills they need to improve their relationship and create a stronger, more satisfying partnership.

Sports counseling

is a form of counseling that is intended for competitive athletes and recreational athletes who are facing challenges in this area. It addresses the psychological and emotional aspects of sports performance, and help athletes develop strategies to overcome mental barriers and improve their performance. This type of counseling can also help athletes cope with injuries, retirement, and other sport-related issues. It can also be used to help athletes improve their focus, motivation, and overall well-being. Overall, the goal of sports counseling is to help athletes improve their performance, build mental resilience, and achieve their full potential.
